which watermaker choosing the right unit for the job! home home which watermaker - the cruisers choice. well here we go - you've already spent $$$$$$ on all your other cruising kit, and now its just the watermaker left. watermakers have come a long way way in the past few years, so here's our watermaker 101 - compiled from comments from you - the cruisers that use them! there are basically two types of watermaker, the ac powered noisy high pressure pump types which consume a lot of power, and the dc low energy 'energy recovery' type models. sailboats typically rely on a dc battery system for day to day power, whilst running the engine or generator for short periods to replenish the batteries or run power hungry equipment like aircon. watermaking should be something you can do at anytime - not just when the genset is running and for that reason we say forget about ac watermakers unless you have a suitable inverter to run them from your battery bank. ok, so where does that leave us? conventional piston pump type watermakers use far too much power to operate efficiently on dc power from your batteries (40+ amps - ouch!) - energy recovery watermakers seem to be the direction in which most sailors are heading...... over the last few years the energy recovery watermaker choice has increased several fold. it's no longer a one horse race with only one brand available and there are several manufacturers out there producing quality units at competitive prices, all using remarkably similar technology.
